African Lisbon Tour: A Conversation We Need to Have

Discover a side of Lisbon’s culture and history that many visitors overlook—and take in a new perspective of the city

How can we remedy this and offer an alternative?
For this reason, the ALT was created to shed light on Portugal’s important role in the slave trade and colonization. This half-day tour through African Lisbon will trace Portugal’s history from the 15th century, the beginning of the transatlantic slave trade, to its abolition in the 19th century.

During the 4-hour walk, we will review the history and discuss it without taboos, based on documents.
The African Lisbon Tour is designed to be a platform for anyone who wants to interact with participants from all over the world, connect with others, and grow while being challenged and discovering new perspectives and history. It allows you to see the neighborhoods of Lisbon with different eyes and admire their beauty.

The experience starts in downtown Lisbon (Praça do comércio) and ends in a restaurant, where you end the day with an authentic African meal and experience Lisbon from a perspective you will not find anywhere else.
This experience began in 2015 when Naky Gaglo, a passionate connoisseur of the history of the slave trade and colonization, realized that these stories were shrouded in myth and the contributions of Africans were completely erased from Portugal’s curricula, monuments, museums, and public spaces.
This is a must-see for anyone living or passing through Lisbon.
